Docurama reveals Moore's complete AWFUL TRUTH
Were you shocked by Michael Moore's acceptance speech at the Oscars? If so, then you haven't seen THE AWFUL TRUTH. As outrageous as he was when he received his Oscar, he's even more defiant of society's conventions in his hit series coproduced by Bravo and Channel 4 in the UK. Whether he's hounding a senator on Capitol Hill or embarrassing a corporate lackey, he will stop at nothing for the sake of spreading his message. So, when given the chance to speak to a theater full of Hollywood bigwigs, let alone millions of people across the world, Moore is not going to follow show-business etiquette.

Docurama presents Academy Award Winner, MAYA LIN: A STRONG CLEAR VISION
Did you have a favorite design for the rebuilding of the World Trade Center site? Our newest release, MAYA LIN: A STRONG CLEAR VISION shows that when it comes to something as important and sensitive as a memorial, everybody suddenly has a degree in architecture. And designs that delight some often offend others. For instance, how do you memorialize the 50,000 soldiers who died in Vietnam? To many the choices were clear. A glorious sculpture of soldiers. A garden in the pattern of the flag. But, a simple black marble wall? Certainly not that.

Before there was "Bowling," there was MURDER ON A SUNDAY MORNING
When "Bowling for Columbine" was announced as the winner for Best Documentary Feature at this year's Academy Awards, no one was surprised. But when MURDER ON A SUNDAY MORNING was announced as the doc winner during last year's Oscar telecast, few had a clue what the film was- including us.

Docurama teams Up with Full Frame for Doc. Shorts
For some time now we have been championing documentary films as the "independents" of the new millennium - long before the popularity and impact of recent theatrical docs (can we cite "Bowling for Columbine" just one more time?) were starting to prove us right. Now, as the label that loves to embrace the under-appreciated, we have started supporting another overlooked genre - the short film.

Docurama to release box office hit LOST IN LA MANCHA
Joining the ranks of other famous "making-of" docs from "Hearts of Darkness" to "Project Greenlight," our newest release LOST IN LA MANCHA is a cautionary tale frightening enough to scare away even the most idealistic of aspiring filmmakers. Originally tapped to do a "behind-the-scenes" look at Terry Gilliam's dream project of bringing "The Man Who Killed Don Quixote" to screen, directors Keith Fulton and Louis Pepe stumbled upon something much bigger. The filmmakers were counting on a happy ending all along, but when catastrophe after catastrophe shut down production, they suddenly found themselves in the middle of an epic disaster - and a film of almost Greek tragedy proportions.

Hegedus and Pennebaker's "Only the Strong Survive" Opens in Theaters
In 1967, an up-and-coming filmmaker named DA Pennebaker shot to fame with the now classic documentary, BOB DYLAN: DONT LOOK BACK. Around the same time, R&B stars like Isaac Hayes and Wilson Pickett were climbing the charts with their respective hits "Shaft" and "(In The) Midnight Hour." Now in 2003, over 30 years later, these pioneers of film and music are still at the peak of their professions. They join forces in this month's theatrical documentary "Only the Strong Survive."

Docurama celebrates the "Year of the Blues" with JOHN LEE HOOKER
Before there was Hip Hop, Rock 'n' Roll, and even Jazz, there was the Blues. Born a century ago in the backwater towns of the Mississippi Delta, the Blues, with its hypnotic rhythm and primal sound, planted the seeds for most of today's popular music. Our latest music doc, JOHN LEE HOOKER: THAT'S MY STORY, honors the man who put the boogie in the Blues and gave it its groove - Mr. John Lee Hooker. To celebrate the 100-year anniversary of this uniquely American art form, the United States Congress has officially proclaimed 2003 the "Year of the Blues." But maybe it should be renamed the "Year of the Godfather of Blues," for the Blues would be nothing without John Lee.

Docurama celebrates the 10th Anniversary of two seminal documentary classics
It was at Sundance precisely ten years ago that audiences first discovered two of today's most influential documentary films. BROTHER'S KEEPER and SILVERLAKE LIFE were complete opposites in subject and tone; the former is a stylized true-life murder mystery, and the latter is a raw video diary documenting life with AIDS. Paralleled only in their impact, both films went on to capture top awards at Sundance - and became instant classics.

Netflix and Docurama queue up for documentaries
When any two of the over one million subscribers of the Netflix DVD rental service start chatting up their source for movies, the conversation inevitably drifts to a discussion of their "rental queue." What at first appears to be a mere laundry list of films that members select for future delivery is actually a source of anticipation for some and a cause of obsession and delight for others. Many Netflix customers groom their queues and maintain a list about ten films long; others can have queues containing hundreds of films. And with Netflix's catalogue of over 14,000 titles, subscribers certainly don't have any trouble filling up their queues, but on the flipside, they also have quite a time playing catch-up with all those great films.

"American Splendor" to hit theaters on August 15th
Sometimes the best dramatic filmmakers are the ones who honed their craft in documentary filmmaking. On August 15th, directors Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini get to walk the red carpet when their first dramatic film, "American Splendor," hits theaters. Working in both fiction and nonfiction filmmaking, the husband/wife, writing/directing team has, until now, been best known for their documentary efforts. OFF THE MENU: THE LAST DAYS OF CHASEN'S - which charts the bittersweet moments leading up to the famed Hollywood eatery's climatic final course - was theatrically released in 1998 to wide acclaim. Their second documentary, "The Young and the Dead" - about a legendary Hollywood cemetery - was a big hit on HBO's America Undercover series last year.

Docurama celebrates 70s cinema with A DECADE UNDER THE INFLUENCE
As another summer of mindless blockbusters winds down at the theaters, Docurama comes to the rescue with a much needed breath of fresh air - A DECADE UNDER THE INFLUENCE. A loving tribute to Hollywood's last golden era, the IFC original documentary transports us back to the 1970's and reminds us of a different time in cinema, a time when the directors were the stars and the audience took risks right along with the filmmakers. It was also the last time a single decade could lay claim to such an exciting and innovative body of work.

Docurama to sponsor IFP Market and the Woodstock Film Festival
It's going to be quite a busy time for us this month. First, we'll be traveling upstate to Woodstock, NY for the fourth annual Woodstock Film Festival. An up and coming film festival, the Woodstock Film Festival has recently emerged as one of the premier launching pads for independent films in this country. Just look to their documentary line-up this year for evidence, which includes new works from such acclaimed filmmakers as Rory Kennedy, Liz Garbus, and Robert Mann. We are thrilled to be supporting the festival this year - which is taking place from September 17th to September 21st - as the official sponsor of the Maverick Award for Best Documentary Feature.

Politics at its best in SEE HOW THEY RUN
The recent gubernatorial recall in California, with its bizarre set of circumstances and slew of underdog candidates, was just regular town politics to the people of San Francisco. It was just a few years earlier that San Francisco had its own atypical election, when the race for Mayor came down to a tight run-off between a write-in candidate, who few thought could win, and the incumbent candidate, a popular Mayor considered by many a shoo-in for re-election. In the spirit of such films as "Primary Colors" and "The War Room," one of our newest releases, SEE HOW THEY RUN is the ultimate insider's look at the crazy world of San Francisco politics and the wonderfully screwed up nature of American democracy.

Docurama goes Cajun style with DANCING TO NEW ORLEANS
We have toured with Bob Dylan, bopped with Duke Ellington, and boogied with John Lee Hooker. Now, we will celebrate the rich musical heritage of Louisiana in our newest music doc, DANCING TO NEW ORLEANS. More than any other place, Louisiana has influenced the development of American music. Its unique mix of diverse cultures have helped nurture the sounds of many modern American music forms including Country, Cajun, Zydeco, Jazz, Blues, and R&B. And DANCING TO NEW ORLEANS is a tour of that fantastic musical legacy.

Docurama goes inside the ring with THE SMASHING MACHINE
Chances are you've heard of the The Hulk and The Rock, but do you know who Mark "The Smashing Machine" Kerr or Mark "The Hammer" Coleman are? One of our latest acquisitions, the highly acclaimed documentary THE SMASHING MACHINE, takes you inside the fierce and savage world of no-holds-barred fighting. In this sport, as opposed to the scripted and acted out fights of the WWE, the punches connect, the blood flows, and most importantly, the fighters are real people giving everything they've got, inside and outside the ring.

As the nation prepares to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of John F. Kennedy's assassination in November this year, the entertainment market will undoubtedly be flooded with myriad of programs attempting to memorialize the man behind the legacy. Ok, we admit it, we too are jumping on the JFK bandwagon. But may we suggest that what we have to offer is truly one of a kind. On November 11, 2003, Docurama will release two landmark documentaries from legendary filmmaker Robert Drew that not only captured the president at his most candid and intimate moments but also changed the face of Television journalism and documentary filmmmaking forever.
