On August 6, 1945, the U.S. Army Air Forces dropped history’s first offensive nuclear bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima, changing the world forever.
Contrary to popular belief, no known film footage exists of the exact moment of detonation over Hiroshima. To remedy this lack of visual evidence in the historic record, the WHAT WENT DOWN production crew looks to WWII historian Martin Morgan for guidance as it attempts to present this horrific event in a way never seen before. To get the story right, the team heads to Japan on a site survey, where it visits the Hiroshima Peace Memorial and accompanies survivors on a tour of the city’s past destruction. To ensure the film portrays the science of the bomb as accurately as possible, the crew even creates its own heart-stopping explosion in the middle of the desert.
Featuring fascinating CGI technology, pointed historical insights, and compelling interviews with Japanese survivors, this one-of-a-kind documentary reveals the crucial moments of one of the most staggering events in world history.
