Stigmata–the mysterious appearance of the wounds of Christ in the hands, the wrist, feet, or around the brow. The most famous and well-documented cases is St. Francis of Assisi, who received Christ’s wounds during prayer in 1224. We investigate the phenomenon and its history, talking to doctors and religious scholars. Is stigmata caused by psychosis or hysteria, or is it a true supernatural occurrence?
