A lyrical and darkly engaging look at the spiritual awakening of a 10-year-old girl." - San Francisco Chronicle
From award winning director Rebecca Miller comes this poignant coming-of-age story about a young girl caught between the harsh realities of a difficult family life and the fantasy world she escapes to inside her head. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance in 2002 for her second film, Personal Velocity, ANGELA marked Miller’s directorial debut when it premiered at Sundance in 1995.
Reminiscent of such beloved films as Like Water for Chocolate and Amelie, Miller uses her own signature palate to paint a world brimming with magic realism. When Angela and her six-year-old sister Ellie leave home to embark on a fantastical journey, the girls seamlessly navigate their way through a beautiful, mystical and enchanting world of Miller’s creation.
Miller, who also wrote the screenplay, won the filmmaker award for Angela at Sundance. The film stars John Ventimiglia (The Sopranos) and Anna Thomson (Unforgiven) in searing performances as Angela’s parents, as well as the captivating Vincent Gallo (Buffalo 66) and Frances Conroy (Six Feet Under). A touching and beautiful story, Angela is a must-see for lovers of independent cinema the world over.
