Joe 90

New to the F.A.B. world of Gerry Anderson, I was instantly intrigued his quirky, sci-fi puppet programs. JOE 90 is completely populated by Anderson’s superbly Supermarionated puppets. Before I delve into the crazy plot points of JOE 90, let me begin by saying the puppets look so lifelike, at a first glance, the series looks like live action. The outrageous premise for JOE 90, that a young boy becomes the world’s “most special” agent by absorbing the brain waves of other agents, specialists, and just about anyone on Earth, creates a universe where anything can happen – and just about everything does. Although JOE 90 is set in the “not too distant future,” the series design is deliciously 1960s. Joe’s adventures take him from the depths of the ocean to the limits of outer space. He foils international terrorists, stands in to protect a royal prince, and even takes the law into his own hands as an Old West Sheriff. Watch closely, and look for the human hands that stand in for Joe’s on the close-ups! Bizarre plot points, ahead-of their-time special effects from Derek Meddings, top-notch writing and voice talent, and truly F.A.B.-ulous puppets make JOE 90 an endearing and exciting program for both kids and adults.

Pride and Prejudice

Simply put, the BBC's production of PRIDE AND PREJUDICE is one of the best literary movie adaptations ever made! An alluringly sexy Mr. Darcy as played by Colin Firth (who continues to make fans everywhere yearn for a Mr. Darcy of their own), the charmingly obstinate Jennifer Ehle as Elizabeth Bennet, the gorgeous English countryside and a classic plot of love, lies and laughter go together perfectly.

Growing up, I loved Victorian stories (when I was 10 I was convinced I was the second coming of Jo March), and this movie was the perfect time machine for me to re-visit that special genre. From its exceptional casting to its witty dialogue, the BBC has done an outstanding job bringing this exquisite tale to the small screen, and, at the same time, remaining faithful to Jane Austen's novel. You'll soon find yourself immersed in the tribulations of the Bennet sisters, namely Eliza and Jane, as they spurn lovers and attract new and surprising ones. Watch how Darcy's pride forms the classic nineteenth century social barrier between his class and Elizabeth's and how Elizabeth's prejudice against his superior manner, as well as her indignation at having to marry well simply because she is a woman, keeps her from opening up to him. But, of course, love conquers all, and this splendid tale will undoubtedly conquer you too.

Napoleon

Ever since I first heard about him from, of all places, Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, I’ve been fascinated by Napoleon, the little French General who almost conquered all of Europe. From his humble beginnings as a General without assignment, to his bloody victories in the defense and expansion of the French empire, he was without a doubt a relentless individual- one who would stop at no cost to achieve his goals as the emperor of the known world.

The A&E rendition of Napoleon was a remarkable film, one that I will enjoy watching for many years to come. It brought the story of Napoleon Bonaparte to life, and made you part of each character surrounding the Emperor. It was, in few words, a most triumphant cinematic experience. The character portrayals in this film were outstanding, with such noted actors as John Malkovich, Isabella Rossellini, Gerard Depardieu, and Christian Clavier as Napoleon. In short, the film was as big as the Emperor's ego, and truly worthy of the phrase, "Triomphe à Napoleon.”

LORNA DOONE

If you liked Pride and Prejudice, you’ll love LORNA DOONE. I got into the literary adaptation genre after watching Pride. Wanting more, I picked up LORNA DOONE thinking I would be lucky if it even ran a far second to Pride, the king of all literary adaptations. It turned out to be one of my favorites.

It may be called LORNA DOONE, but the real story is about our hero, John Ridd, played by the talented, Richard Coyle (Coupling). In the Doone family’s bid to take over the countryside John’s father is killed. Swearing a lifelong vengeance against the Doones, he finds himself unknowingly falling in love with one of them. This is an honest-to-goodness love conquers all tale with a few battle scenes thrown in to show us that John’s a man brave enough to fight for the women he loves. With just the right amount of brawn and sensitivity Coyle is the ultimate leading man. The photo on the cover doesn’t do him justice.

It’s Bravehart meets Romeo and Juliet. I highly recommend LORNA DOONE. At a length of nearly two and half hours it’ll leave you wanting to see more of that cute John Ridd. That’s why it’s good to have your own copy.

FULL FRAME DOCUMENTARY SHORTS DVD

Before I saw this collection, I used to think that 30 minute long movies must be inferior in some way to full-length, “real” movies, and therefore just avoided them. But, after viewing the 7 fascinating short movies in this collection, ranging in length from 3 to 36 minutes long, I realized that short films could be just as satisfying as full-length docs.

Each of the short films in the collection affected me in its own way. Mira Nair’s LAUGHING CLUB OF INDIA, a humorous look at the phenomenon of laughing clubs in Bombay, made me want to stand up and hoot. It was like “Monsoon Wedding” on laughing gas. But, THE SUNSHINE, an intimate doc on the residents of one of the last remaining flophouses in New York’s Bowery, taught me about a sad and dying part of my hometown that I knew nothing about. When one of the residents, who has cancer and is addicted to methadone, casually says he’s got problems, I knew that my run-of-the-mill concerns were nothing. And, FAMILY VALUES, an amusing portrait of a suburban Lesbian couple who run a business cleaning up gory crime scenes, kind of grossed me out but also made me contemplate the meaning of family in America. Not to mention, it got me thinking up some new, crazy business ideas.

My pick is the FULL FRAME DOCUMENTARY SHORTS COLLECTION because each of the short films in it has a different style and cover tough or thoughtful issues. People are used to 2 hour-long movies, but if you watch these docs you’ll learn that shorts can be just as good if not better.

BROTHER's KEEPER

As a frequent visitor to the area in rural New York State where the Ward brothers live, I have a larger interest in the compelling story of BROTHER’S KEEPER, one of the most successful documentaries of all time. However, this real-life murder mystery transcends its rural, small town locale and serves up a suspenseful and mesmerizing drama that can be appreciated by everyone.

Named one of the 10 Best Films of 1992 by over 50 major film critics and winner of numerous awards, including the Audience Award at Sundance, BROTHER’S KEEPER is definitely for fans of powerful documentaries about human nature and the justice system. It’s also a down right good “whodunit.”

Available on DVD for the very first time, I am especially excited about the 10th Anniversary Edition of BROTHER’S KEEPER because it will include lots of extras including filmmaker commentary, deleted scenes, updates, and exclusive footage of the Ward brothers in New York City—certain to be fascinating!
